The Earth revolves around the Sun

These words seem very unsensational now, but at the time they were uttered by Nicolas Copernicus they were considered heretical and profoundly untrue. A heliocentric world would mean that the Earth was not the centre of creation, something that for many seemed to shake the foundations of our self identity and beliefs.

Another quote from Copernicus is:

"To know that we know what we know, and to know that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge"

... does anyone remember a certain Donald Rumsfeld using the word 'know' - or at least 'known' that many times in a sentence not too long ago?!?

If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin

Hero of many and villain of some, this quote comes from Charles Darwin, he of the evolutionary theory.

Other quotes from Darwin include:

"It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."

...of course assuming it is responsive in the right ways; and showing that it wasn't him that said 'survival of the fittest'...

"A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life"

...but it's OK, reading a quotations blog must surely count as a very wise investment of time!
